Over the course of my education I have been asked this question several times, if not by every person I know. Why do I want to teach? Some times I have a grandiose answer that is philosophical and "deep" and other times I simply say "because this is what I was born to do."
Sometimes, I will admit, that I get tired of hearing and answering this question but I still think that it is an important one. Obviously, it isn't because I will be a millionaire or that I want summers off, simply because probably neither would happen, but I still really want to be a teacher.
Truly, I suppose my answer to that question would be because I want to change the future. I also really love to be around kids and those children are the future, literally and figuratively. They will be the ones who create policies and vote laws into existence, they will be the ones to keep our society and technology moving forward, they will be the ones who create their culture (for better or worse). In 100 years, I most likely won't be around to see the changes that they will have made, but I will be able to rest easy in my grave knowing that I am one of the ones who guided them in their decision making processes, I was the teacher that stood at the front of the class and told them just exactly how important they were and why their choices matter. Much like the Lorax speaks for the trees, I speak for the future.
Some part of the scares me and the other half makes me proud. It is quite a bit of pressure to realize that the "fate" of the world hangs on the shoulders of our children today and the children of tomorrow. Technology, methods and philosophies will come and go but the duty to change the hearts and minds of one's students remains constant.
Okay, so on a much less serious topic! The next question I am usually asked is what interests me about being a teacher. I am interested in so many different things about education so this one is a hard one to answer. I would have to say that I am interested in interacting with a group of students each and every day, discovering new ways to present materials, and in general, making learning a fun experience for all. My emphasis is History so I guess a major interest is historical things. I probably should have seen this one coming though because I collect depression dishware, look it up if you don't know what I am talking about because it is super neat! I also collect old hats. Not to mention that I love to spend hours and hours in museums, antique shops, and the antique booth at the fair every year! Just try to make me leave!
Well, since I have filled up a huge space I had better let you all get back to life now, let me know if you have any questions!
